Two weeks ago I had the privilege of being the documentarian for Kleinfeld, New York’s most elegant Bridal dress shop. I used the Canon 5D Mark II to capture both photo+video of the entire three days: sometimes I would shoot video to capture interview footage, while at other times I would shoot stills only. Sometimes I would shoot both photo+video at the same time!

Below are a few images from the various runway shows we witnessed…

Team Kleinfeld, including Mara the owner, Randy the Fashion Director, and Dorothy, the Buyer. Everywhere we went, we were treated like royalty!

I love this shot of the attendees taking notes as the models came down the runway.

Kenneth Poole’s Platinum Collection brought down the house!

The highlight of Bridal Market was the show at Tiffany’s. The whole store was closed for the show. The dresses were breathtaking. I love the reflection of the model off the case.

I was fascinated how the dress people who attended made their choices by simply circling their choices. So low-tech, but so perfectly simple…

Bridal Fashion Week

I’m off to New York for Bridal Fashion Week. I will be documenting team Kleinfeld as they check out the latest bridal couture, meet the designers, and pretty much have a blast with the industry’s hottest names. I will be editing what I shoot for Kleinfeld’s new blog, which will be hugely popular since Kleinfeld is THE place to go to get your wedding dress.

I will be shooting with the 5D Mark II, since I want to bounce back and forth between photo + video with the push of a button. I do not have the time or space to carry too much gear. My plan is to put a lav mic on Randy since he is the focus of the piece; he is the Fashion Director of the store.

Stage 6 at Steiner Studios

Catered by the fabulous Abigail Kirsch, Stage 6 is one of Brooklyn’s most unique spaces. Sonal Shah of Sonal J. Shah Event Consultants did the planning, hair and makeup was done by the wonderful Bridalgal, the insane tree centerpieces by Atlas Flowers. Of course we were there with photo+video!

I love how we burn or darken parts of the main image, which allows the eye to move from the hand on his forehead to the row of shots in color from left to right. We enjoy embracing negative space now in our designs!

Indian weddings are all about color and movement and life! It is easy to get caught up in the chaos and forget to compose. During this part of the ceremony, I remember thinking to find the composition amidst the chaos, so I focussed on one woman, who just happened to be an important family member. She was leading the women to the house to receive a blessing from the mother of the bride.

Getting ready at Stage . I love the intensity of the bride as she assesses her hair!

The groom by his lonesome next door. I love how the two scenes are complete opposites.

Anu all dressed and ready to go to DUMBO. The image on the right was shot by Asya with her Holga medium format film camera!

Rodrigo, the groom, was standing waiting for Anu to get ready. I was sitting down and from my angle I saw the lines of the lights. If I didn’t change my point of view, I would have missed this great shot. I teach so much about angling the camera about 10 to 15 degrees, to keep all the lines in the photo from being too straight.

All film, all shot by Asya. The camera she uses shoots in square format. Squares are fun to use in designs like this. We are about to edit the DVD; wait til we animate this album page!!

DUMBO, one the most famous views of New York. They were shooting a movie in the park across the way so we used this perspective to work with.

I love this image! Shot with my 85mm 1.2 lens at the widest aperture. I love how their clothes are pushed to the right by the howling wind!

The Baraat — when the groom and his family dance their way towards the awaiting bride’s family. We cropped the image on the left so just the bride can be seen. Talk about action and reaction. I shot the image on the right with my fisheye lens, then whirled around with the 70-200mm to get the image on the left. I always have a wide and a zoom on me at all times. I want to establish the scene and show details at the same time.

After the bride came down the aisle, they were separated by a veil. I quickly found what I hoped to be the best point of view. So much of what I do is on gut instinct; I know in my heart I found the best place to be at this moment. I try to view my life in the same way: did I choose the right place to be, the right action to take, the best possible sum total of choices that defines who I am?

Once again, fisheye is always at the ready.

The crew at Stage 6 flipped the room like I have never seen! The centerpieces are literally trees with their leaves turning colors!

Ashley and Blake: PAFA

Yes, I am the world’s slowest blogger! My last event from 2008 at the amazing Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Evantine did the design. I love how the artwork becomes part of the story. PAFA is such a special venue!

The images below are from their album design which is about wrapped. We like to produce our albums within three to four months of the event along with the entire DVD…

When I shot this image, I was thinking that we could do something special with the window since the sash created a horizontal line going through the frame. So, we took it out. We kept going and dodged out much of the window frame to create this dreamy look.

Taken in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton. ISO 3200 with the Canon 1D Mark III. I was at f/2.8 at 200mm so critical focus was hard to get but this came out really well.

I love fisheye. No matter what, I have this lens attached to my Fuji S5 almost the entire day. I talked so much at WPPI about the “cinematic presentation space” of our albums and DVD designs, how a wide format takes advantage of how we naturally see the world. Fisheye helps me achieve this idea.

A perfect example why two-camera coverage is so important. No way I could get both perspectives at the same time. Kudos to Hunter for getting the moment on the right.

We blended two images together to make this collage shown above.

The image of Ashley was posed and set up with a video light. Blake was not posed and was right before the ceremony.

Shot with fisheye with Q-flash high above to my left. I wanted the shadows to cast downward so the light is angled towards the floor. I wanted to paint with shadows here and I think the effect was what I was looking for.

The center image is the anchor. Chase, my cinematographer that day, alerted me to this moment. Without looking, I rolled my aperture to the left to open the lens to allow for more light. No time to do anything else. Evantine rocks!!

I recently found a very old comment that was posted to my CityVoter account. A client of mine write some very unfair and nasty comments. I felt I was wrongly smeared! So I sent an email out to a few clients, asking them for their honest feedback. Wow! I am floored! I posted them below. Thank you guys for taking the time to write such wonderful comments!

Professionals and true artists, the Studio Nine staff are experts in their field, are flexible, and are willing to do what it takes to satisfy one’s taste and vision. We couldn’t have been more satisfied with the work they did for our wedding and we will continue to use them to capture memorable events in our lives.

Jorge and I would like to thank Jonathan and his crew for doing a great job at our wedding. The day was beautiful and the pictures came out great. Everyone said that the pictures look like magazine pics.
He went to my dress fitting in Kleinfeld, NY to take pictures so we can have a story to tell on the photo album. I loved the idea!
To top it off, when I received the e-mail with the wedding album proof I was surprised and happy it was done so fast.

Studio Nine is amazing, I am a graphic designer so our wedding photos were extremely important to me. When I first got engaged and was looking around for wedding photographers I was having problems finding one that had an artistic touch in a world of extremely traditional and boring photographers.

I remembered I once went to a photographer in the city to interview as an intern while I was still in college. I remembered his photography was amazing, but since it had been years since I couldn’t remember the exact name. After searching online I finally found him and looking through his portfolio I saw that his work has only gotten better.

Our experience with him was great. The day of the wedding he was doing his thing and almost invisible, so much so I actually was a little worried until I finally saw all of my images for the first time. There were over 1,000 photos and all amazing. The video as well was perfect, just the right amount of live video of the important moments of the day mixed with stills and our own selected music, which really made it our own.

You won’t be disappointed!!!

We LOVE Jonathan’s work. He has completed a one year session on our daughter’s first year of life and it is truly amazing. Not only does he capture every emotion but he gets the spark in her eye. She loves working with him and the quality of pictures are amazing. Everyone who walks into our home raves about the pictures I recommend him to everyone whether it be bridal (he did our wedding as well and I LOVE those pictures too) or baby and kids. I will continue to recommend him highly and will continue to use him as our photographer!

Words can not express the amazing pictures, DVD, album, or work of Studio Nine Photography. I got married in May and hired Jonathan and crew after meeting with a couple of other photographers. At our 1st meeting with Jonathan, we could tell his laid back personality totally meshed with mine and my finance’s. We did not want someone bossing us around and sticking out on our day like a lot of the other photographers do. Jonathan was professional and seemlessly fit into the day we had envisioned. His artistic approach to photography was exactly what we were looking for. Photo journalism is such a buzz word in wedding photography now, but what Jonathan did was more than photo journalism. He is a true, innovative artist. The mix of 8mm film, still pictures, and video created the best DVD I could have imagined. The way he used light to highlight and capture the day was amazing! I can not say enough about how pleased we were with Studio Nine Photography.

We love the Ritz-Carlton! Such an amazing place with amazing light! This end-of-evening slideshow is one of my favorite since it has such a definitive style and feel to it.
I was taking photos while it was playing and when it ended I heard someday say, “How did they do it so fast?”

Studio Nine @ Loews Hotel Philadelphia

This was our first end-of-evening slideshow we produced! We projected the slideshow on a large screen for all to see. The slideshow ended and the room was in shock! Nobody moved for what felt like forever. Then the place erupted in applause and we knew we were onto something great.
The Loews is a favorite spot of ours with its amazing art-deco design, massive windows, and lots of photographic options to choose from.
